Performance management strategies help agencies strengthen their workforce by connecting staff performance, supervisor training, and agency goals.  Does your agency use performance management to set clear expectations, support staff, and manage progress toward goals? This Workforce Conversation Guide provides a series of questions to help your workforce team examine your current performance management efforts. It highlights questions related to aligning performance expectations with employee competencies, using continuous quality improvement processes, supporting supervisors, conducting performance reviews, and implementing disciplinary practices to support the workforce.

When agencies are experiencing challenges such as a hiring freeze or high vacancy rate, a review of performance management practices can help leaders implement strategies to retain staff and align the workforce with organizational goals. This guide is one of the QIC-WA’s self-assessment tools to help child welfare leaders bring together human resources professionals, analysts, and staff to look closely at existing workforce policies and practices. The questions included in this tool were developed by workforce experts and draw on research and practice in child welfare and related fields.  One goal of examining performance management strategies is to ensure that data already collected is being used to support agency decision making.
