An Agency Self-Assessment of Hiring Practices
Every hiring decision affects your child welfare agency’s capacity to protect children and support families. A strong selection process, or the steps you take to hire job candidates, builds a competent, committed workforce aligned with the agency’s goals. There are many steps involved in this process from evaluating job descriptions to training those involved in conducting interviews to scoring candidate responses. This Workforce Conversation Guide is designed to help agencies look at the process and identify opportunities to improve it. Although this guide is designed for self-assessment, the Quality Improvement Center for Workforce Analytics (QIC-WA) strongly recommends that agencies seek out additional help, such as a consultant with specialized knowledge on job analysis, candidate assessments, and compliance with employment laws. Additional resources are listed at the end of the Guide to help agencies connect with professionals who are trained to identify and support organizations as they work through workforce challenges.
The selection process fits between the recruitment and onboarding processes in the employee lifecycle. The QIC-WA encourages your workforce team to consider your agency’s approach to those topics as you consider your hiring practices, as they are interrelated. The following Workforce Conversation Guides are also available to support your agency:
